What is coaching?
It's probably not what you think.
Most people hear 'coaching' and picture a sports field, a motivational speaker, or something you turn to when things have gone wrong.
Coaching for young people is different.
It's a conversation. A consistent, supportive space where a young person can slow down, think about what they want and work out what's getting in the way — without judgement and without someone else telling them what they should do.
Coaching is focused on moving forward. We help young people understand themselves better, get clearer on where they want to go and take practical, achievable steps to get there.
We might explore what's worked before or strengths they already have, but the focus stays on where they are now and what comes next.
How coaching works
Every young person is different, so every coaching conversation is different too.
In sessions, we:
Listen properly to understand what's going on and what matters to them
Ask questions that help them think things through and see things differently
Explore what's getting in the way, and what might be possible
Help them recognise their strengths and understand themselves better
Encourage them to try new things and step outside their comfort zone
Support them to make their own decisions and take practical steps forward
We don't tell young people what they should do. We work alongside them to help them find their own answers.

Young people come to coaching for lots of different reasons, including:
Sometimes a young person knows exactly what they want help with. Sometimes they just know something doesn't feel quite right. Both are OK.
Why it works
There's real science behind why coaching makes a difference.
Research in positive psychology shows that focusing on strengths and possibility — rather than problems — leads to lasting changes in confidence and wellbeing. Studies in motivation and human development tell us that young people thrive when they feel autonomous, competent, and connected. Coaching creates exactly that environment.
Decades of research into how young people develop has found that belief in your own capability is one of the strongest predictors of achievement and wellbeing. Coaching directly builds this.
And at a neurological level, being genuinely listened to activates the brain's safety systems, lowers stress, and opens up the conditions for growth. The conversation itself is doing real work.
What coaching isn't
Coaching isn't therapy and it isn't a diagnosis.
We don't assess or diagnose young people. If an assessment or diagnosis may be needed, this must be carried out by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
There are also some areas we don't work with, including OCD, PTSD, eating disorders, addiction, trauma processing, personality disorders, mood disorders, safeguarding concerns, suicidal ideation or involvement in legal proceedings.
If something comes up that sits outside our scope, we'll be honest about it and help point you towards more appropriate specialist support.
